Dream Theme

What does it mean when you have a recurring theme in your dreams--that theme being that you're wandering through a building, and you'd like to get out, but you can't find the exit. Nobody is chasing me (darn you Nobody!), and there are usually people I know in there, being friendly and nice (but usually waiting around for something, they're never ( Read more... )

Wait, is it really me chasing you, or just "no one"?

I think Ori is onto something with his interpretation.

A lot of times, a building or house represents the dreamer's self or the dreamer's life. Inside would represent security, where outside represents freedom

In a dream where unwanted creatures are entering the house, those creatures may represent the dreamer's anxiety about bad habits or ideas that they are tempted to adopt from others around them.

It sounds like you don't think this is your house, it's just a building you happen to be stuck in. Is that the case? Maybe you feel stuck in a life that you don't consider your own. It's not a bad life, really, you'd just like to get outside.

In the dream, do you yearn to leave the house forever, or go outside and come back, or maybe go outside and figure it out later? How do you feel about churches in waking life? Do these dreams disturb you, or just make you curious, or somewhere in between?

A lot of religions look at the individual "self" as an illusion, and the real truth is we're all one and blah blah. There's talk about only two things to be afraid of. One is being stuck in the box that is a single individual life, one self seperate from the universe. The other is losing the box entirely to rejoin the great one-ness with everything. Fear of the box is fear of life, fear of losing the box is fear of death.

I don't remember what they say to do about these fears. Probably chant and meditate or something. No matter what you do, there's only so much control you can have about how long you're alive for, so there's not some terrible decision to make, just fears to reconcile.

This might not really be related to your dream, though. "Outside" in a dream doesn't necessarily represent "death and universal one-ness", it might just be "a change of scene". Or it might be something completely different.

A lot of people like to "step outside themselves" for a period of time. I think that's a lot of people's impetus for taking vacations, taking drugs, meditating, or taking up a hobby or classwork that none of their friends or acquaintances are into.

Very interesting interpretation--I'm more afraid of the box and am looking for the exit, which I like to think of as "freedom" rather than "death". But I feel like the entire structure of the universe is becomming more and more clear everyday, and yet the same ridiculous micro-structures continue to exist within it, and people passionately cling onto these tiny thing without noticing the big picture all around them. I feel frustrated by that, but don't know what to do about it, other than attempt to be a conduit, rather than a blockage.
