why isn't he emailing me?

My dad that is. We had this tearful goodbye at the San Francisco airport almost a week ago and I haven't heard from him since! My mom emailed me like three times which is unusual for her since typing is not her strong point! Other than that, I'm having a fabulous time here. My family is wonderful and last night we went to see these amazing fireworks. First of all, we were basically directly under them. They were super loud but so beautiful. And! they kept going and going. I thought it was the end about three times because they were shooting them off like crazy, like a finale in America, but then another song would start to play and there were even more! I realize I really love fireworks. There's something so magical and dare I say...romantic. I know I'm a little too cynical about romance to say that, but if I had a list of romantic things that would be on it. Afterward we went to the fete in the town where I live. It was basically a carnival with lots of high schoolers standing around and talking about each other and bisousing everyone. I was with Elsa, the 16 year old so we were part of it too! It was fun for a while just people watching and trying to understand her and her friends speak super fast, but then I got tired and wanted to leave. Plus it was way awkward kissing all these random people and not even knowing their names. I know introducing someone a million times is annoying so it's all good.

Today was our first day of class and it reminded me a little of Mrs. Selvin, my high school french who I adore. We were doing a little Commentaire Compose. The french have all these strict forms for analyzing literature and poetry and this is one of them. I like it though. I think what I hate about writing is it's difficult for someone to teach it to me save for making me do it a lot and then critiquing what I've written. This way, there is a very clear format for what we're supposed to do and all we have to do is figure out what we think about the passage, or whatever it is we're analyzing. We're reading a short story by Flaubert, pretty good so far. She's super laid back about reading which is awesome since I'm not really ready to actually start school...

I got my first letter today!! It was most exciting, thanks dude. My host mom told me about it and she seemed pretty excited. She also told me that when she put it in my room she saw my little pile of laundry so she took it and washed it for me...so nice. My mom at home would never have done that. But then she washed my clothes for the better part of 15 years so I guess it's ok.
I'm thinking about all of you Oxy kids starting classes tomorrow, good luck, keep me updated!! I'll keep sending emails/updating this thing.
Bisous,
Kate
