You also have to take into account how Kurt has recently been publicly reviled in High School (nominated prom queen, etc). He's not used to people knowing of him and LIKING him for it. Even New Directions spends most of its time mocking each other and ... generally being horrible at one another ( ... )

I think that's what I mean when I said people "knowing" him. Knowing the old him. Which is not him anymore. Even if it sorta still is? Question mark?
I would hardly call it headcanon, since you're justifying yourself using examples from the series. Which is wonderful, because it shows that you really have a feel for the character.
((Are you sure the "issues" with the Warblers were really Kurt's kurtness, or was it just a generic case of individuality vs conformity? The only time when it ever really seemed to come up was when he didn't get the solo on the first try, but from a musical perspective, the decision made a lot of sense to me. I think Kurt just took it a little more personally than it was intended. After all, he later got his moment in the spotlight WITHOUT having to audition, right?))

That Kurt was being told not to stand out was probably still a point against "himself" in his mind, though? It's a thing that's come up a few times in canon before that point-- like, "can't you try not to stand out so much", etc, so having to do that musically... I'm not surprised Kurt balked! He got over it, and it really helped him reach a place where he's a much better team player, but yeah, at first it was probably a bit melancholy to still be told that in a place that's more "accepting"? I don't think it was a slight against Kurt personally, but yeah I can understand him thinking that!!
