He's had a few threads with Rachel discussing the whole "THE WORLD IS GONE EVERYTHING IS SAD", but mostly they're both trying to get over it/not dwell on it? And also the post on father's day, and even the baking post-- the thing with Kurt is, he might be all about dramatic gestures at times, but he's private. This is the kid who spends the week with a father who might never wake up breaking down in a library. That Kurt is a very proud kid who doesn't easily accept help has been established a lot in canon! He doesn't talk about his problems. It takes huge circumstances for him to even start talking about it-- the Karofsky thing being first in the list. Kurt is so, so used to dealing with things on his own, the ship is just an extension of that. He's not unhappy on the ship, not completely, but yeah a whole lot of him is putting on a more carefree facade ( ... )

NO, NO, YOU"RE MAKING SENSE! I just wasn't sure of a lot of these things because I follow *so* many characters around the ship with Brittany that stuff gets lost in all the CR ( ... )

No, no, you're not-- the point isn't that he's uncomfortable with people knowing him! It's that they know of him. They know Kurt as he was a year ago, and he was so different then. It's like meeting with an aunt you don't remember and she keeps telling you "how you were" and comparing you to how you used to be. There's always going to be that comparison hanging over a conversation, even if they don't necessarily do it aloud. In general, having people know details about you, (especially when you're a very private person, like Kurt) can be very unsettling! And that they think they have an understanding of him because of it is a bit insulting. He genuinely likes the people he's met that know him; he's just not comfortable with them because of it.

You also have to take into account how Kurt has recently been publicly reviled in High School (nominated prom queen, etc). He's not used to people knowing of him and LIKING him for it. Even New Directions spends most of its time mocking each other and ... generally being horrible at one another ( ... )

ha ha ha.

I think that's what I mean when I said people "knowing" him. Knowing the old him. Which is not him anymore. Even if it sorta still is? Question mark?

I would hardly call it headcanon, since you're justifying yourself using examples from the series. Which is wonderful, because it shows that you really have a feel for the character.

((Are you sure the "issues" with the Warblers were really Kurt's kurtness, or was it just a generic case of individuality vs conformity? The only time when it ever really seemed to come up was when he didn't get the solo on the first try, but from a musical perspective, the decision made a lot of sense to me. I think Kurt just took it a little more personally than it was intended. After all, he later got his moment in the spotlight WITHOUT having to audition, right?))

That's basically what I meant by kurtness, haha. That Kurt is very much unashamedly himself no matter the circumstance; including standing the fuck out, which is-- not so good from an a capella standpoint! Hence Blaine's whole TRY TO NOT ... TRY SO HARD NEXT TIME... 8|

That Kurt was being told not to stand out was probably still a point against "himself" in his mind, though? It's a thing that's come up a few times in canon before that point-- like, "can't you try not to stand out so much", etc, so having to do that musically... I'm not surprised Kurt balked! He got over it, and it really helped him reach a place where he's a much better team player, but yeah, at first it was probably a bit melancholy to still be told that in a place that's more "accepting"? I don't think it was a slight against Kurt personally, but yeah I can understand him thinking that!!
