Personally, I thought it was always something that could happen, starting with, hilariously enough, Hairography-- Kurt and Rachel have a lot in common. They're obviously not exactly the same, but they have similar interests and personalities, not to mention similar views and goals. They're the kind of best friends that drive each other nuts but love each other regardless, imo. And they both so obviously recognize the other's talent! Not to mention their hilarious similar taste in men.
(No, seriously, it is comedy gold.)
Rachel put it together well in new york; no one else understands their intensity, their dreams, etc. That they both didn't get along at first was mostly because of how similar they were, and how both of them didn't want to admit it; because Kurt is mean and Rachel is annoying, partly. But Rachel and Kurt are both vicious, and lonely, and wanting, and dramatic, and yes.
BASICALLY: hummelberry sounds like a cereal and I kind of love it. Francy and I play it out partly because we agree with canon's take, and partly because we've wanted it for very, very long.
Also technically season 2 started establishing it starting in Duets! Then Furt, then Special Education, then SSSB-- okay I'm going to shut up because no one cares.

You definitely have a point with all the similarities and such. I guess I had just seen their relationship as going the way of more "friendly rivals" than outright best friends. I don't necessarily mind them being friends...it's more like I felt it snuck up on me, considering the majority of on-screen development seemed to be between them and other people.
(Rachel and Kurt could be their own spinoff...in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they do)
AND I TOTALLY CARE! Or I still wouldn't be debating over this. :-P
