End of the month announcements!

Hey-o, MH! It's modspam time!

The schedule for this upcoming week looks roughly like this:

×Tuesday, May 25th is Towel Day!

Towel day, you ask? What the hell is Towel Day?

Douglas Adams, writer of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the genius who created the universe in which we are playing, passed away on May 11, 2001. Fans of his series the world over celebrate his memory on May 25th, two weeks after his death, by carrying a towel.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has a few things to say on the subject of towels.

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Krakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: nonhitchhiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, washcloth, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet-weather gear, space suit, etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitchhiker might accidentally have "lost." What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

What this means for the inhabitants of the S.S. Thor is pretty simple: On May 25th, every scrap of clothing (including clothes in stores) will mysteriously and completely vanish! All hope is not lost, however! Remember that towel you were presented with when you first arrived on the Thor? You don't? Well, maybe then hope is lost after all. Sucks to be you. For the rest of you who do remember, though, guess what! Your towel (that massively useful thing) has not vanished! This means you have something with which to hide your shameful, shameful nakedness (and yes, you should be ashamed. Shame on you.) for the duration of the event, which is, all told, quite short at only two days long. Clothes will reappear as if they were never gone at the end of the event.

Since real world Towel Day is only one day long, we'll be stretching game world Towel Day out over the course of two days, Tuesday and Wednesday this week, to make sure everyone who wants to participate has enough time to do so. We'll be posting an announcement in the main comm when it begins, and another when it ends, at which point we will also be beginning our next Improbability Drive Event!

×Thursday, May 27th will mark the start of our next Improbability Drive Event! It's fairly simple this time around, and shouldn't last much longer than 3 or 4 days. (We'll let you know exactly how long we expect for it to last once we get it begun.) Should you choose to participate, you will be taking one of your character's five senses and eliminating it! Sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch are what will be affected, and again, which one you choose is entirely up to you! Have fun plotting!

×Friday, May 28th: This is your first warning for the May Activity Check! The post for the AC will go up the evening of the 28th, so if you still don't have your two posts in for the month (or are still short on the extras we requested if you were missing posts in April), you've got all this week (and two events!) to get your activity in! We're going to be trying something a little different that will hopefully save some time after the initial setup, so be ready! We'll explain a bit more once the actual post goes up, of course.
