I gathered up saliva and spit it over my lip.
Rose grinned.
I grinned back.
Then Rose did something incredible. The bedsprings started to creak, and, jerking and sliding across the mattress, she plopped herself at the edge of the crib, much closer to me. Alarmed, I jumped back, stared at her twisted, quivering limbs, and knew, in that instant, that she had deliberately willed her way toward me.
