Five lies Loki told Hermione.
written for the beautiful trickster_loki

1. "You're my favorite pet, Hermione," Loki says, and she knows he's lying from the moment he opened his mouth. Still, this is her favorite lie, so when she thinks of the lies he's told her, this one comes to mind first. She's sitting on the steps in her periwinkle, formal gown just after the Yule Ball. She doesn't know where Ron and Harry are; she pretends she doesn't care, but the tears make it obvious that she does. She squeaks through a sniffle when Loki appears beside her. He's kind to her, but lying; she doesn't mind though, because at least he's there and telling her things she needs to hear. "I would've made a point to ask you in front of everyone. And, you know, love, I've always been partial to periwinkle."

2. "I'm going to marry you someday," Loki says, and she believes every word. She's five, which she proudly shows anyone who asks by wiggling four fingers and a thumb. She's on a camping trip with her parents, and they think she's out chasing a squirrel through the woods. Actually, she's standing by a small pond where an older yet rather youthful boy is skipping rocks across the water. Her eyes are wide with fasincation, and she decides aloud that he must be a prince. She tells him all about princes, princesses, castles, because she's been reading about such things. She babbles, as only as a child can. She doesn't know it's Loki, or really, what a Loki is. He doesn't volunteer this information, as he's already made the mistake of promising her something he never intends to keep. "I'll be a prince for you - a trickster prince! We'll live in a very big, very pretty castle, happily ever after."

3. "I'll kill Voldemort, love," Loki says, and she merely shakes her head. They're sitting on the floor in her room. She is sorting through her books while he is contentedly making his way through a box of Twinkies. She's very troubled, but she isn't saying anything about it. And, they both know Loki won't be the one to kill Voldemort. There's rules, destiny, and other assorted mortal things that deities mustn't tamper with. Still, he looks at her with those eyes, and she believes for a moment that he might be telling the truth. She tries not to cry, but she's very overwhelmed - she's just sent her parents off to Australia, believing they're different people entirely while she sits here packing for a wild goose chase with Harry and Ron. "I'll keep you safe, pet. Nothing bad will happen to you."

4. "We didn't meet when you were little," Loki says, and she sighs rather moodily. She remembers a boy with those eyes who promised to marry her. Ronald isn't that boy, and yet, here she stands in front of a long mirror in her white, muggle wedding gown. She's looking at Loki with a glance that's a mixture of a dare and a plea. Loki can't tell her the truth, not to his dear mortal pet who will age and die while he remains youthful and forever. Ronald makes her happy - he assumes, though he's never actually met the bloke. Telling her truth would make things complicated, so instead, he lies, which he thinks is the easier choice. But, when he speaks again, she knows it's a lie, "Ronald is your prince. You'll live in a castle, happily ever after."

5. "I've never lied to you," Loki says, and she knows better than to believe him. This is by far his most obvious lie to date but decidedly the most comforting - so, she remembers it last on her list on notable lies, keeping it closest to her heart. She's standing on a beach in Australia, looking out at the ocean. Her parents are packing; the war has barely been over for a month now, but she knew she had to bring them home straight away, despite her worries. They're saying they aren't upset with her, that they're proud, but she believes they may be lying juding from the way her mum is holding her jaw so tightly and the vacant look in her father's eyes. She did what was right, that much she's certain of. She had told Harry and Ron she would be gone for a bit, but neither of them questioned her whereabouts - Harry is consumed with Ginny, and Ron is consumed with grief still. But, she's not alone as she tries to skip stones across the water, hearing them land with an ungraceful plop. Loki is next to her, skipping rocks without fail. And, for the first time, she believes he tells her something of the truth, "I love you, Hermione."
