Well ... I don't read a whole lot of non-fiction ...
... or rather, I don't read much of what I think of when I think of as non-fiction (histories, biographies, how stuff works). I tend to forget that myths and fairy tales and poetry and plays are all in the non-fiction section. But these are about all I read from there (and I'd be hard-pressed to pick a random one to highlight), other than a few books assigned for class. So, yes, here's a book I read for a class that was actually really good.
Things We Couldn't Say by Diet Eman and James Schaap Things We Couldn't Say is the true story of a Dutch woman's experiences helping Jews during World War II. The woman in question, Diet Eman, came to speak to my high school (my senior year, I think). She gave a great speech, but it was being assigned her book as Honors English 101 reading my freshman year of college -- and meeting her again in the smaller setting of that class -- that really made me remember her. She is a hero to the Dutch Jews her work rescued, yet she is very humble and down to earth. She is a courageous woman and the kind of person for whom the word "Christian" is not a superficial label; she has a deep, deep faith in God, and that is what has gotten her through her trials. Things We Couldn't Say is definitely worth a read.
Also, I'm pretty sure she was in her 80s when I met her -- it takes some guts to keep traveling around the country speaking to young people at that age. Diet Eman, I admire you!
