sytycd: our top twenty

Folks, it's that time of year again: So You Think You Can Dance is back! Man, I am so. Excited. This is the only reality show that I love wholeheartedly. And unfortunately, I didn't even get to catch very much of the last season because the timing conflicted with my work schedule (this was before I'd begun to watch tv online). My hours are different this year, so it should all be ok. Anyway, I just wanted to share a couple of thoughts about tonight's episode.

I don't have a favorite dancer yet. I think it's way too early for me to be able to tell, especially since is the first time I'm "meeting" our top twenty. I tend to skip the audition phases, as well as the Vegas phase, because I don't like forming attachments to dancers who don't get to stick around. Anyway, while I don't have a favorite dancer, there were quite a few routines that I thoroughly enjoyed. Some of the ones that stood out are:

-the first hip hop number. I am a huge fan of Tabitha and Napolean's slower choreography. The "Bleeding Love" routine from last year (which, I am pleased to say, I actually got to see) is one of my most favorite routines, like, ever. It's right up there on the list with Ivan and Allison's "Sexy Love" number, the Travis and Heidi bench routine (there are no words to describe this number. It is the first piece of dance to have ever come close to making me cry), the Pas de Deux with Will and Katee (amazing, incredible, beautiful), and anything that involved Benji and Donyelle. I'm still kind of sore over the fact that Courtney made the top four over Chelsea. Anyway, I just thought it was a great way to start off the night.

-the cha-cha. At first, all I could think was, dude, wtf are you using lady gaga for? I didn't see how "Pokerface" would be suited to this type of dance, but wouldn't you know, I got so into the routine, I didn't even notice. It was just a very fun number, with a lot of neat moves that I really liked (the split between her legs? Very cool). Plus, Jonathan was so adorable! AND, Karla toured with Wicked. Yeah, she may have gained some extra points with me for that. In fact, maybe it's best y'all don't listen to what I say about these two. I mean, let's face it. Where Wicked is involved, I'm automatically gonna have a complete bias.

-both jazz numbers. The first was intimate, and very pretty. Absolutely lovely to watch. The second was just plain cool. I'll be honest, I don't fully understand some of Wade Robson's pieces. He's left me scratching my head in confusion on more than one occasion. However, I can definitely appreciate his genius (and his new hairdo. Lookin' good Wade!). I mean, that hummingbird routine he did with Jaime and Hok? So. Beautiful. Anyway, this was another awesomely unique piece by him. And the dancers performed it wonderfully. The costumes, and lighting were just a quirky bonus.

-the contemporary routine. I don't have much to say about this one, other than that I thought it was gorgeous. Seriously fantastic number. In other words, wow.

I think these guys all have a lot of potential. I’m really looking forward to this :)

so you think you can dance
