I've written about this before. Man on fire with Denzel Washington is one of my all time favorite movies.
I am prone to being inspired by acts of sacrifice, stories of redemption through a single and preferably swift act of total nobility. I like anectodes about justice and vengeance. Especially on behalf of the fallen, the downtroden, and the underdog. Many of my favorite shows fall into this category: Last of the Mohicans, The Crow, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, Angel.
I realized yesterday that Man on fire is all of these things and more. The more is what makes it burn for me.
I see it as a story of a man who is completely overwhelmed with guilt, remorse, and shame for the terrible things he has done in his past. A story of his redemption through sacrifice for an innocent and beloved child.
