Big news, I had my first encounter with a camel spider last night. I came out no worse for wear which is more than I can say for the camel spider right now. Tim 1, C.S. 0!
We moved into the middle of BFE. There is NOTHING for miles around. We do have to be careful for bedowins (spelling?) migrating there camels across the highway though. While I'm sure my humvee would win, I wouldn't want to have to fix the damage or clean the mess that the camel would leave. My goal is to ride one, or at least touch it.
I finished a rather outlandish book the other day. I heard about it at Ranger School and bought it when I graduated. It was called Empire by Orson Scott Card (guy who wrote Enders Game.) It took place in the not too distant future and was the second American Civil War, the left wing versus the right wing. I was sorely dissapointed. The jacket made it out to be a book with lots of battles and the "high tech versus the milita" but none of that at all. It was more of a conspiracy book similar to The Sum of All Fears. What was cool was that at one point they had to infiltrate into the state of Washington through Idaho. They discussed going into it through Lewiston into Clarksville or pass through Genesee. Both towns I have been to. That was pretty cool.
Now I have decided to attempt to check off something on my life's "to do list." I have begun reading The Lord of the Rings. It has been something I have been meaning to do for quite some time given how all my friends from highschool read them, the movies were outstanding, and my nerd buddies not only plaid games about it, most games I play in my nerdier times tend to draw some influence from the books. Reading the books has brought back memories of huddling around boards in my parents larger rooms playing either War of the Ring or The Lord of the Ring. Those were some good times (not sure ones I can really go back to) and the folks I really miss are some of the ones I know I will probably never see again.
So here I am, saving Iraq one glass of chai at a time.
