He jaunter and arrived in darkness and empty space and immediately plummeted down. 'Christ!' he thought. 'Mis-jaunted?' The broken end of the rafter dealt him with a bruising blow and he landed heavily on a shattered floor upon the putrefying remains of a corpse.
There is a bookshelf next to my desk, so taking a "nearest" book is quite problematic. I took the nearest English-language book, which happened to be "Tiger! Tiger!" by Alfred Bester (also known as "Stars Are My Destination"). I've been rereading it a couple of months ago, when Buffy had been temporarily turned into a super-human, and I wanted to refresh my memories about similar precedents in literature.
