1. I reached skip=280 on my friendslist today, and this constitutes a massive amount of catching up. Just so we're clear on the crazy levels of backlog. And I'll be on hiatus completely next week, so there go those plans of active fannish engagement ( Read more... )

There is race wank again? And here I thought fandom had failed to explode while I was in California.

Eh, not really -- it was sexism wank, and the racism offshoot didn't take off because the accused person didn't engage. That it happened out of the context of race discussion just reinforces that there's an epidemic of policing and silencing that troubles the hell out of me.

I've been really into The Mountain Goats lately. "Lovecraft in Brooklyn" is actually one of my less-favorite songs by them/him, because it's kind of a stylistic break. But yeah, catchy.

Would Mr. Baldwin be willing to explain why skaters get the scores they do? Of course, he's skated under Code of Points, so he'd probably be more willing than NBC's current people.

Johnny Baldwin has had a 30-year competitive career (!) under both 6.0 and CoP, and he's had his greatest success most recently, under the CoP, as a pairs skater. Having seen some of his men's singles performances from the '90s, he probably would have fared better in that discipline under CoP, too. So he's definitely qualified to explain CoP scores in several disciplines, and best of all, he'll be funny about it.

I was so looking forward to the Summer Olympics, and then Tibet. So, YouTube. Also, awwww..

Though they are partners in synchro, Boudia and Finchum are competitors as well. They have contests in practice and push each other to be better. Despite sometimes fighting "like brothers, over nothing," they root for each other. "I'm happy that he wins and I know he's happy when I win," Boudia says. They each want to win, and beat each other, but they don't let it affect their friendship.

Also, cycling. Except, no, because ohmygod boys stop doping. And rowing, because HOT. And, BEACH VOLLEYBALL. Regular volleyball is wtf, but beach?? Best sport to watch on television, evar. Still waiting for a Misty May/Kerri Walsh fic... will probably have to write it myself. Hmm. Or, hey, Rosenthal/Gibb. Because seriously.

....shutting up now.

The Tibet situation, you know, not watching the Olympics isn't going to change anything. I watch everything on DVR delay, so I don't count as a viewer. Also, I was quite the tiny activist in high school and college, and one of the things I took away from that is that it's more useful to write letters that begin with "As a consumer of your fine product..." than to boycott something and deprive oneself of happiness. So that is my justification. I'm protesting China's Tibet policy on my own time, as I've been doing for years, and then I am watching diving.

Because, you know, WHERE IS MY PORN.

I'm not really into any of the other sports you mentioned, but I'm glad someone is excited about them and looking forward to the miscellaneous flist squee.
