Tarako, tarako, tsubu tsubu tarako.

Well, that's one less new show I'll be watching this season. I forced myself to sit through the first 15 minutes of Smith last night. Granted, Studio 60 has completely ruined me in terms of my standards for new fall drama, but this was such a big flaming explosive ball of Not For Me. Meaningless killing of random people who had done no real wrong. Female characters neatly divisible into mothers and whores. Fifteen minutes of character introductions that gave me no incentive to invest myself emotionally in any of these moronic assholes. Worst of all, not a single funny line. I don't know, maybe it picked up in the second half hour, or it starts to get good around episode three, or something. But it's much easier to just cross stuff off the list.

Especially when it means I get to go back to watching Law & Boredom: Sucktastic Vagina Unit (now the official name of that show) and make a little wizened_cynic very, very happy.

In other news, I'm pretty sure this contains subliminal messages of contentment and harmony, or something, because the entire country of Japan is obsessed with it and after four minutes not only can I totally see why, but I know that if I were still there, I'd be obsessed with it too. The song started out as a jingle for a commercial for pasta sauce. "Tarako" means "cod roe," as in fish eggs, and it's a popular flavor of pasta sauce in Japan. (Once you get over the initial squick that is often a barrier to the enjoyment of Japanese cuisine, tarako sauce is actually pretty good.) The link is to the music video for the full-length song that was developed out of the jingle, because the surreal commercials (also YouTubeable) became so popular. It'll take me a couple more viewings to really get the lyrics, but from what I can tell, they're as delightfully bizarre as they ought to be: "delicious in my mouth, delicious in my dreams," and that kind of thing. (Warning: Mgt. accepts no responsibility for earworms contracted in the watching of this video.)

Top Models tonight! So much excitement, so little excuse not to be doing my course reading.
