School and two lists

Oct 08, 2007 00:00

I haven't done a school update yet, and I'm going into the second week, so I might as well, right? I promise it's not too long and hopefully not too boring!

Of course, I'm already behind in homework. I didn't go to school on Friday because I was dead tired and not feeling too hot. So I have to catch up from that day as well.

My classes this year, as I've mentioned before, are Attic (ancient) Greek, Fitzgerald and Hemingway (F&H to me), Lit Theory, and Modern American Poetry.

Greek is going pretty well. I still love it, even though it's much more tedious this quarter than it was last quarter. It's harder, too, since the professor doesn't always write things down and I'm not very good (yet?) at hearing a word and knowing what it is. I do better seeing the word. But I can do this! I know it. *wills self*

I adore F&H. The professor is amazing. He's probably in his 70s or 80s, and when he talks about these writers and these texts, I find myself staring at him and hanging on his every word - not even taking notes! Also, he is a great reader. I've noticed that a lot of the Lit professors I've come in contact with aren't the best readers. When they read from the texts, it's just to get through it quickly so that he or she can comment on it. But this man is amazing. I feel like I'm his 6-year-old grandchild and he's reading me to sleep.

Theory... where to begin? I'm not sure about this class yet. It's very unstructured and the professor is a rather free-thinking woman who wants to know how we feel about everything we read. There are no midterms, papers, or a final. The grading is based on weekly assignments (where we can basically ramble on for about 250 words about that week's readings) and a group presentation/project (which I think is basically us leading the class for one period, but I'm not entirely sure). She flat out told us on the first day she's an easy grader and will give us all A's if we do the work and turn it in. So, it'll be an easy A for sure, but I doubt I'll learn anything. *shrugs*

Lastly, Poetry. I really like this professor. I've had him twice before, once for a lower division survey class and once for last year's film noir class (which I adored). He even recognized me on the first day, so that's good! He's pretty cool, and he loves it when students speak up in class, which I tend to do when I have something to say. Though I'm not terribly interested in poetry, I like the class a lot, and the discussions we've had so far were really good. The other students speak up, which always helps keep things moving. I'm excited for this one!

The stuff I have to catch up on (mostly here for my benefit):
Herodotus' Histories in English (must finish book by 10/15)
Herodotus's Histories in Greek
Continue in Great Gatsby
Get Theory reader and, er... read everything from last week
Read Erza Pound on MAPS and write prompt for Tuesday

And non-school things I have to do (again, mostly for me):
Work on Halloween costume
Finish Neville essay by 10/15
Work on smutty_claus fic
Start hp_holidaygen fic
Write part three of Neville/Luna cross-dressing fic (Hopefully by Halloween, since it's Halloween themed)
Rubric the latest three Scribby essays

In other news, I found out that if I play my cards right, I'll be out of here on time (in the spring, that is)!! For the last year or so, it was a toss up for a while.

P.S. N'AWWWWWWW! Lookit Joe in my mood theme picture! Innit 'e cute?!

list, school, literature, omg i'm almost done with school
