Enter the Haggis - No More Stones

Jun 18, 2009 12:21

In speaking with Brian from Enter the Haggis last night, I found out that they had a "B-sides" album available on their website that I could download. (I knew that the album existed... I just didn't figure I'd be able to download it, because I figured it was on iTunes, which I can't use. Turns out that it's NOT on iTunes, and purchasing it means you get an email with a link to a direct download of a zip file. Yay for simplicity!)

Anyway... I mainly wanted the thing for an unreleased instrumental song called "For a Movie" that Brian's been playing as an intro to one of their other songs and is one of the most beautiful pieces of piano/keyboard music I have heard in a LONG time. I'm listening to the whole thing now, and one of the songs (an "alternate version" of a song on one of their other albums) actually made me stop what I was doing and re-start WinAmp. I even looked up the lyrics online because even though I like this song, and specifically remember singing along to the chorus, the lyrics of the verses have never quite sunk in to the conscious brain. I then went back to listen to the "original" version, and discovered that the lyrics are the same. How odd. The only thing I can figure out is that in this "new" version, the vocals are little louder than the music, so they stand out more. And since it's one of the songs where Brian is pretty much chanting the lyrics to the music without taking a breath, being able to HEAR the lyrics makes a big difference. ;)

"No More Stones"
by Enter The Haggis

Thought we had a grudge against
Our friends who live beyond the fence
Victims of a circumstance or writers of our fate?
Proud enough to cast a stone
But not enough to lose our homes
Now it's done we have been shown
The things that were at stake

Should have stopped to think about it
Would have brought to mind our doubts
I wish the silent ones had shouted
At us to our face
Would we even listen then?
Or could we only see the damage
When the dust had settled
And we finally saw the waste

CHORUS:
Hey, ho, the wind has blown
Won the war, now there's nothing to show
Seeds sewn, time to grow
No more stones to throw

Now it's time to reap the corn
But no one's left to grow it for
I'm knockin' on my neighbor's door
Alas, to no reply
Now I want to live in peace
But no one's here to live with me
I should have learned of harmony
Before I took a side

Situation took a hold of
Common sense and wouldn't go
Although I guess we could have known
The error of our ways
All alone at dinnertime
No one's left to drink my wine
As I propose a toast to
Every family that paid

I'm just kind of staring at those lyrics at the moment going "Wow."

And now I want to listen to the song on repeat for 17 days so that I can get the rhythm down enough to sing along. Hey, if I can learn Gaelic Storm's "Beggarman" just by listening to them sing it a dozen times, then I can figure out "No More Stones" when I have the lyrics in front of me. :)

You can actually listen to the song (and the full album, in fact) if you go here.
