I've decided that I'm going to skip Aug 2 for the next few years.
First, I got an email from my mother first thing in the morning telling me that my cousin had died. He and I have never been close, although we used to see each other fairly regularly when I was in the 5-10 age range. I think he was about 15 years older than me, but I honestly don't know for sure. It's still sad to hear that someone in your family is gone, because you know that even if you and the person in question weren't close, there are other people that you care about who are heartbroken. I hope that makes sense.
Secondly, I got the news that
Tommy Makem had died. As a fan of Irish music, I was stunned to hear that he had passed away. I know he's been sick for some time, but... it's Tommy effin Makem! He was a goofy old man, and I may have heard his jokes a bazillion times, but thoughts of him and the twinkle that was always in his eye will always make me smile. Milwaukee Irish Fest just won't be the same without him. I'll always remember standing in the parking lot with him, watching the fireworks and laughing hysterically when all the car alarms within a 5 mile radius went off at the sound of the finale. :D
Thirdly, I got a text message last night from
fotoldy03 informing me that Carbon Leaf had announced that
Scott was leaving the band. While I can honestly say that I don't have a "favorite" in the band, I can also say that Scott is the MAIN reason that I have developed an obsession with the drums in other bands. He's a very talented musician, with a biting sense of humor, and I'll miss him very much. I'm still shocked at the news, especially since the press release sounds to me like it wasn't Scott's decision to leave.
So yeah. Thursday sucked. Not doing that again.
File sharing time:
Tommy Makem - Gentle AnnieAnd the song that will always and forever remind me of Tommy Makem:
Makem & Clancy - A Place In The Choir In other news: Apparently, there's some other fandom-related drama that's winging its way around? I'm guessing Harry Potter, just from the little snippets I've seen here and there, but not being involved, I really don't care to comment. Except to say:
What she said. Word.
And in other, completely unrelated news: I started making jello shots for MIF last night. Hey, I had to do something to make the night end on a positive note. :) (still haven't tasted them yet, 'cause they were still liquid when I went to bed... but I have a feeling they're going to be dangerous with the lack-of-alcohol-bitterness since I used vanilla schnapps instead of vanilla vodka) :-9
