His first appearance in the books didn't annoy me very much either, but when he kept returning, it really started getting on my nerves. His role in the story was just too... mary sueish, and I can't stand sues. *coughs*

Oh my god, yes, Jake's death really hit me, too. .__.
As if his first 'death' hadn't been horrible enough...
And Oy's death was tragic, too. I liked that little guy so much. <3
It's definitely impressive if you consider the fact, that King has mainly improvised the story. Most writers have to plan the plot in detail before they start writing, so this IS a very impressive achievement. =)

Well, there HAS been a more detailed backstory, but only in the Dark Tower graphic novels by Marvel (beautiful art, I must say - the picture above is from these comics *-*). The first volume tells the story of Roland, Cuthbert and Alain during their time in Meijis, and the next volume continues that story. The most recent issue is about said Battle of Jerico Hill, I think, and after that begins the 'real' story from 'The Gunslinger'.
I haven't read the comics yet, though, mostly because they are so damn expensive here in Germany, but I really want to do that sometime. :)

For me they have also been some of the first books I've read by King. I'm not really a fan of his, but I'm very into this postapocalyptic stuff, so it was only a matter of time until I discovered the books. xD
I only knew 'The Shining' before, which is - plotwise - the better book in my opinion, but not even half as entertaining. :)
And I read 'The Stand' after I finished reading the third book of the 'The Dark Tower' series, because I've read somewhere that he would be important for the story. I can definitely recommend 'The Stand', although it got a bit boring in the second half. But the first half in which King describes how the world dies ist just so damn amazing (well, at least for those who enjoy that kind of scenario ^_~).
