Short version: AO3 announced that it's rearchiving a whole siteful of stories (from an old archive considered "at risk") with the permission of the archivists but without the permission of the authors of said stories, who will then somehow be allowed to claim their stories (and opt out if they want), after the stories go up on AO3 - although it may be many years and email addresses ago that the authors gave permission for the original site to archive them.
It's only a major breach of fannish etiquette as I have always understood it. What could possibly go wrong?
ETA: I see no reason to exempt AO3 from the standards of behavior I expect from others in fandom (such as not archiving without obtaining prior permission from the author), and if they violate those standards they should expect to get called on it just like anyone else.
