Philadelphia report

Jul 28, 2011 23:29

Back from Philadelphia after a flight delay of more than three hours. My husband is happy that the Giants won, and I can report that Brian Wilson's beard is even more hilarious/terrifying IRL than it is on TV. There could be mice living in that thing. Rats, even.

We skipped crossing the river to Camden, New Jersey, to see the battleship USS New Jersey due to time constraints, instead staying on the Pennsylvania side to visit the protected cruiser USS Olympia (oldest floating steel warship in the world; Admiral Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay; sole surviving naval ship from the Spanish-American War) and the Balao-class submarine USS Becuna (a WWII fleet boat converted to a Guppy 1A in 1951; very cool for those of us into submarines). I was fine with seeing them instead of the New Jersey because I've already been on an Iowa-class battleship (the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor). I'll see the NJ next time, along with the approximately eighty thousand other interesting things I didn't have a chance to see because we were only in Philadelphia for one day.

Phillies fans not as scary as advertised, or perhaps we were just lucky. Had no trouble getting around on public transit (and the SEPTA employees were quite pleasant and helpful). H has a conference in Philadelphia next year, so I'll probably go with him then to do all the things I missed this time.
