I'm stuck at home all day waiting for the satellite guys to show up and (I think) put up new dish(es) and (I know) give us new receivers.
I'm being dragged kicking and screaming into giving up my lovely HD DirecTivo receivers (which can't receive most of the HD channels DirecTV now offers) for the shitty nonTivo HD receivers DirecTV is now using. I love my Tivo. Tivo is a hundred times better than the nonTivo DVRs I've used at other people's houses. However, standalone Tivos don't work with satellite TV and the local cable company's offerings are nowhere near what we can get from DirecTV, so we're stuck. *seethes*
Right now we have one round dish for the local stations and one oval dish that has the standard-def channels and a few HD channels. I believe we'll be retaining the local dish and getting a new one for all the other channels (now including all the HD channels on DirecTV), because they're on a different satellite from what we've been using. Supposedly DirecTV is going to turn off the feed from the satellite we're currently using at some point. Hmph. I have been willing to have only a few HD channels if it meant I could keep my Tivo, but that isn't a long-term option.
SO ANNOYING.
We own the DirecTivos (I've been warned that sometimes the techs try to walk out with them) but don't own the (unused) standard-def non-DVR receiver they gave us last time, nor will we own the new HD receivers. I thought we could move the living room DirecTivo to the bedroom and move the bedroom one to the basement, but I fear they won't work as receivers anymore after the outside work is done, in which case we'll have to use the new receivers they're bringing. There's still a ton of stuff on the living room DirecTivo that I need to watch, but it just needs to be hooked up to a TV for that.
DID I MENTION THAT I AM REALLY ANNOYED?
If the last time we upgraded our dish is anything to go by, the techs won't even have the right gear with them and will have to come back another day. We have the two dishes which are connected to a switch, and from that we have two lines going down to the living room for the dual-tuner receiver, one line to our bedroom, and one line to the library (which is going to be moved down to the basement instead). It gets kind of complicated.
ETA: During our recent bout of basement cleaning, I think H might have overzealously thrown out the standard-def, non-DVR receiver DirecTV gave us last time. Which belonged to DirecTV, not us. *headdesk* I really hope the techs don't ask about it. I can't get in touch with H right now to find out for certain.
ETA2: There's water dripping out of the furnace's backflow valve. I know the drill for this by now. *puts bucket under valve and calls repairman*
ETA3: Yes, H threw out the old receiver. Which belonged to DirecTV. Yay.
ETA4: The tech didn't have the right mount for the new dish, so he has to come back and do the job tomorrow. WAS I RIGHT OR WAS I RIGHT? Anyway, were getting one new receiver (DirecTV Plus HD DVR HR21) for the living room that will get all the HD channels and we can keep using the two DirecTivos elsewhere in the house until that satellite feed is switched off at some point this summer, at which point we'll have to replace them with the HR21s.
