An
American Robin (Turdus migratorius) has been building a nest on top of our porch light for the past couple of days. I've taped over the light switch so we don't cook the eggs after they're laid or, even worse, start a fire. Also, I have resigned myself to sweeping the porch underneath it and wiping up bird droppings on a daily basis.
Once she finishes the nest and lays the eggs, it will be 11-14 days before they hatch, then another 15-16 days until they're fledged. Sometimes robins do two broods a season, too, so there could be a second batch later.
I hope we don't get dive-bombed too much by concerned robin parents. It's not like we forced them to nest by our front door! We'll try to keep the door opening to a minimum, but we can't stop using it entirely. The robins are just lucky we don't let our cats out.
