Books! Glorious books!

My Children of Húrin arrived from Amazon today! Finally the long version of their story, "as an independent work, between its own covers, with a minimum of editorial presence, and above all in continuous narrative without gaps or interruptions...without distortion or invention, despite the unfinished state in which [J.R.R. Tolkien] left some parts of it."

*glee*

I wonder if loving Túrin Turambar makes one like a battered wife, in a way. (Did I mention that I adore Fëanor, too? Truly there is no hope for me!) :-P

Seriously, I think that Túrin would have made a pretty big hash of his life even without Morgoth's curse. The curse just made certain that it would be SPECTACULARLY TRAGIC. Poor Niënor, though, did nothing to deserve her fate (unless there are major changes in her character in this version).

I'm already reading two books at the same time, which is unusual for me.

1) England Under the Norman and Angevin Kings, 1075-1225 by Robert Bartlett, which has been in my TBR for ages.

Quote of the day: "Aristocratic courts may have been more like rugby clubs than like Camelot."

My fellow watchers of the BBC Robin Hood might want to give this book a try. (Keep in mind that I read doorstop-sized history books for fun, and that I really like footnotes.)

2) High Deryni by Katherine Kurtz, which is a reread.

I recently replaced my aging paperbacks of the first two books in its trilogy with the new hardcover revised versions. I cannot wait for the revised version of this one to come out in December, so I'm reading the old one. I plan to reread the rest of the Kelson-related books after this. Well, except perhaps the latest one, King Kelson's Bride, which I did not like.

Sometimes authors should not give their fans what they want (Kurtz has described KKB as a Valentine to her fans, which really should have warned me, you know?), especially when what they want is sickly sweetness, unrealistic numbers of royal love matches, and an abrupt change in darkness level. I like my angst, damn it!
