Regret?

Regret is a bittersweet emotion. As we play out the "what ifs" and the "should have beens" we find ourselves smiling at what we consider what would have been an ideal ending - or perhaps, in some cases, an ideal beginning. But smiles do not remain in places where chances have been lost. Resentment, sorrow and perhaps even self-loathing seep in, beginning to fester. And so comes the bitter part of the equation that is regret.

Regret is a haunting emotion. When it takes hold and burrows down into the brains and hearts that house such a feeling each new choice terrorizes those who cling to their "has beens". Those troubled with feelings of regret second guess themselves at every turn, hoping to avoid the mistakes of the past that have been so irrevocably burned into their minds. And such is the sometimes melancholic, sometimes terrifying but always ghostly visitation of regret.
