I was visiting a 90-ish year old lady in her downtown, upscale apartment (as part of my job) and when I mentioned her knitting, she said
"I don't know if I should tell you what I am knitting now, you might think I am crazy." I raised an intrigued eyebrow.
"Mittens for bears." I wondered whether she meant teddy bears, because I couldn't imagine why real bears would need mittens or that they would last very long.
The object she held up to show me, however, looked like a tube sock for bigfoot, and was very sturdily knit (worsted weight yarn on US5 needles). Okay, not for a teddy bear. I still couldn't imagine that it would last very long, and why a bear would need mittens.
She explained that the large carnivores at the zoo have to be sedated for many things, even basic vet procedures, and that while they are unconscious, their paws get cold. Well, that makes sense. A zoo volunteer, knowing she knitted, asked for her help.
So a little old lady is sitting in an comfy armchair in her luxury highrise knitting bear mittens--and my world just got a little more magical.
