Got back from Florida on Saturday. We had a really great time away. Just sooo good to do nuthin' and relax. Switching from the 80 degree weather to the dark and dank February weather of western NY has not been fun, but what can you do?
So, while we were gone some friends of mine watched my dog, Dobre. They had to take her to the vet's on Monday evening after she had wolfed down about 8 or so pounds of frozen pumpkins that were in a compost pile in their backyard. At first they didn't know what in the hell was wrong--they thought she might have had bloat--but the vet x-rayed Dobre and said that it just looked like a lot of sold food packed in there. Yup. They figured about 8 to 10 pounds of....something. My friends couldn't figure out what she ate at first, but they knew it had to be a lot, as they measured her belly at 34 inches! (She's a 70-75 pound, 6 yr old black lab). They noticed outside that the compost pile had been disturbed and that the pumpkins looked like they'd be chewed on by something.
The vet kept the pooch overnight, hooked up to a saline IV along with a mild laxative. The next day, after some really impressive farts, my little girl started passing a lot of pumpkin. A. Lot. Of. Pumpkin. Enough that they moved her to her own part of the kennel. Everything turned out OK and she was back with my friends by Tuesday, running around with their dog as if nothing happened. Never a dull moment.
