We should recognize agnosticism and atheism as religions. If not, they could be “established,” because nothing says they can’t. You think the public schools are bad now ( Read more... )

Why must the rest of us, as a matter of public policy, accommodate her if she just hasn’t been careful? I am highly sympathetic to rape, immaturity, domestic violence, men-who-do-miscellaneous-other-bad-stuff and mental illness. “Not bothering to be careful” does not cut it with me when I see what could be on the other side of the scale.

You know I'm pro-choice. Not pro-abortion, but pro-choice (my stance is that I loathe abortion and wish there didn't have to be a need for it, but that it is a necessity in some situations and needs to be there). But I have always believed what you said above. The "not bothering to be careful" is the part of the pro-choice argument that I cannot abide. Abortion should NEVER be a woman's only means of birth control, that's ridiculous, and I believe that is when it becomes a sin. A friend of mine had an abortion not long ago, and I hope she never reads this, because I had a very, very, VERY difficult time being supportive of her for the simple fact that she and her boyfriend did not use any kind of contraceptive. Nothing. How can you just use NOTHING and expect to not get pregnant? I could not feel sorry for her and lied to her and told her I did. I also had a hard time being supportive, and this may sound very cruel of me, because she said she didn't want to do it but did it anyway, because her boyfriend "wasn't ready to be a father." *sigh* Then I guess you should've bought condoms! I know she's hurting still, and I try so hard to be there, but then I think of my best friend, who had a miscarriage and wants so desperately to have a child but can't right now due to health concerns and it just makes me mad at the other friend all over again.

I have never thought that a doctor or pharmacist should have to dispense medications like Plan B or RU-486 if it went against their beliefs. That's just awful. It reminds me of something that happened when I worked for Nextel, albeit it was a less serious thing...they asked us to lie to customers who called in to ask about a pending lawsuit. A coworker friend of mine asked if she'd get in trouble for not giving out their line of bull to customers; she was told yes. Her answer: "I'm sorry, but I'm not going to Hell for Nextel." ;)
