Let me tell you a little something about Alice in Chains: they are LOUD. Not "Oh God, my ears are bleeding! Make it stop!" loud. More of a big, smiley "If I'm going to lose all my hearing this is the way to do it!" loud. Within minutes of taking the stage at Madison Square Garden last Friday night they managed to usurp Rage Against the Machine as

"and there were stiletto heels in abundance."
who wants to stand in those for two fucking hours? CRAZY.
"The other girls clearly wanted to get noticed, and I clearly did not."
who wants to be noticed at a concert? YOU'RE not there to pick up guys! :D
"When I shared this revelation with Greg the next day he said, "Why do you think I don't dance?""
HA!!!!
"Mastodon (who sucked just like Greg said they would), and the Deftones who who were okay."
two opening bands is ALWAYS ONE TOO MANY.
"We Die Young"
LOVE.
IT.
and i just posted the vid to someone ELSES who'd posted "Down in a Hole", and I told her about how I'd JUST been talking about AiC to someone else on LJ.
"Paula Abdul"
STRAIT UP, now tell me, are you love me forever? OR ARE YOU JUST HAVING FUN?
:P
"I just didn't have the anger and aggression to go with it. (Of course, now at the ripe old age of thirty-one, I've got it in spades.) "
don't get me fucking started!!
"But back then I couldn't emotionally plug in to bands like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. Their sound was too hard for me."
PJ aren't even that heavy!
AIC IS A METAL BAND!!! look at ""We Die Young"" vid, they're even headbanging!
"bone up "
hee hee hee!
"And then, a few weeks back, I decided there were several truly classic rock bands I needed to see live before any (more) of their band members died, and Alice in Chains was one of them."
who else? classic rock as in OLD like the rolling stones? or classic as in YOUREALLYLIKETHEM?
"1998, the year I flunked out of college."
SCANDAL!!!
"Hell, I sang along to "Rooster" and I don't even LIKE that song! Never have."
GASP!
"Just goes to show that every thing sounds better live."
i dunno about that. I love studio records way more than live records!
"Whenever Henry Rollins is in town, we go see him"
and he says "I SEE YOU TOO!"
"We Die Young"
I wanna remake this vid/song as a short horror movie wherein the main characters kill themselves one at a time as the chorus WE DIE YOUNG plays.
why are you LOOKING at me like THAT?

That depends on who you ask. Yes, their sound is very metal, but many people consider them one of the pre-eminent grunge bands due to the content of their songs and the fact that they came out of Seattle. They'll go down in history for that reason alone. I guess that's what I meant when I said "truly classic" rock bands - bands that will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the greats of their time. Pearl Jam is another one I'd like to see before any of those guys kick the bucket.
As for my assertion that everything sounds better live, I stand by that. I agree that live records aren't always great, but seeing a band live and feeling the excitement of the crowd and the enthusiasm of the musicians is a totally different experience. It automatically imbues the music with meaning. At every concert I have ever been to, at least one or two songs I didn't like were played. And even though those songs continued to suck when I listened to them on the album, when played live they were fucking awesome. "Rooster" was great live. Still sounds like crap to me on the album.

then you need to see the THRASH TRIFECTA also: Metallica, Megadeth, and SLAYER.
"Pearl Jam is another one I'd like to see before any of those guys kick the bucket. "
they're a little to boring to suddenly die off! :P
" I agree that live records aren't always great"
oh good!
I've only seen live music TWICE so I can't comment on it in that sense. I hate crowds, and cheap (or at various times have no money) and am overly sensitive to noise.

i remember hearing that one on the radio.
AiC is more metallic than most of the grunge bands, and that's certainly part of why I like them best of that stuff!

I've always thought Dave Mustaine was kinda cute.

How long ago was that, and who did you see?

That's pretty much Greg's position. He is a complete metal head.

I'd go with talented and obnoxious rather then cute! :P lol
"He is a complete metal head. "
has he been a good metal influence on you? exposing you to good music n such?

I think so, though I'm sure others would disagree. I'm discovering that every metal head has a different idea of what constitutes "good metal." He's got me listening to Sabbath, and Ozzy even though he thinks I'm gravitating toward "bad" Ozzy. I've never been a huge fan of Metallica and even his influence can't change that.
He introduced me to Opeth and Dream Theatre and Alice in Chains, of course. I gravitate to the more melodic, introspective, and yes, commercial sounding metal.

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! FIRST SIX ALBUMS ARE PURE AWESOME!!!!
" and Ozzy even though he thinks I'm gravitating toward "bad" Ozzy."
"current" ozzy rather than CLASSIC era ozzy? still better than NO ozzy!
"Opeth"
I actually find them UTTERLY boring, but I appear to be in the minority there!

Fates Warning? Queensryche? Judas Priest? Iron Maiden? Trouble? Cathedral?
right now I'm listening to SAXON! :D

*sigh* I know. I think you mentioned that the last time I brought up Opeth. I can understand why you would though. The experience of music is totally subjective. What I find beautiful and relaxing, you may find snooze enducing.

yup. THEM and COLDPLAY!
i didn't care for the vocals, and that makes a big difference to me, also.

that's surprisingly GOOD! :D
"Down to Earth" SUCKED, that's the most recently-released Ozzy album I'd bought! what's this one from?

I've seen pearl jam live, I was rather bored. they played way too much new stuff.
