i just bought another laptop.
i got a sony VAIO loaded with windows 7.
why? you ask? because i needed a powerpoint platform for my CCW class that had an HDMI output. ill be selling some other stuff as a result.
this brings me back to the mac/pc issue.
windows 7 is ALOT like the mac OS in many ways but the designers keep getting it wrong. 7 is supposed to be simpler with fewer distracting popups but i dont find this to be the case. in fact i still get the infuriating windows 8 popup that one gets, everytime i boot up IE. i googled for ways to get rid of this and apparently it requires editing the registry and i don't feel like fucking with that. once again, windows is just more complicated than it has to be, BUT if you had to make the transition fromm mac to 7, a week of frustration would probably suffice for learning the new system.
that being said, the MAC OS is really better IMO.
the magic mouse for mac, is just the BEST. so simple and convienient. slick too.
other than the mouse, and the really nifty slim case for my mac, the hardware advantages of the mac are:
2.8 duo core/500 gig HDD/4 Gig memory
the touch pad
the 7 hr battery
built in bluetooth
this is a refurb, purchased directly from the apple store. cost 2000.00
disadvantage to Mac, no readily available access for user service. i'd have to send it back to apple for a screen replacement.
otherwise, the VAIO kicks mac's ass. ive got two card readers, four USB's, and the HDMI port.
HDMI means i can plug directly into my 46 inch LCD television with maximum resolution.
oh, and Blu-ray Drive
2.1 single core/400 gig HDD/4 gig memory
case is nice and attractive, not as nice as the mac of course. as with all PC's there are access points for memory upgrades etc. i could replace the LCD myself on this machine.
battery appears to have 2 hr life according to the energy monitor.
cost 699.00 sam's club
i guess if you do the math and are on a budget, there is no question. the only advantage to mac is the better and neat software and ease of use and maximum cuteness.
one other thing about the Mac that bothers me. after all that ergonomic hocus pocus, the two USB's (there are only two) are so close together that if my USB devices have plugs that are too fat, i can only plug one in at a time as the inputs are to close together. plus, there is no delete forward key. only a delete backspace key.
im sure that people will be debating this forever, with PC/MAC users firmly entrenched in their respective forts.
you will just have to figure it out for yourselves.
if i had known i needed the HDMI feature several months ago, i wouldn't have bought the mac. as it is, i will be using the mac for most of my in house personal stuff, the vaio for the class, while the new desktop PC sits idle and unloved despite the huge screen with adjustable aspect ratio.
im typing this on the business computer, an HP desktop with mini tower.
all the PCs have that annoying IE popup BTW. grrrrr
