This Game We Play

This is the result of playing a game about wine with champagnesly. I know nothing about wine (untrue but basically accurate), and Sly knows a lot, so I asked Sly to describe what wine would best represent what Hetalia character. Then, for kicks and giggles I went on thecolorof.com, searched for the wine in question to get the "pure" color of any given wine. And then I did a google search to see what they looked like in the glass, so to speak. THEN I took them into photoshop, and pulled out a color pallet from those two images. And then I painted the Hetalia character that the wine colors are supposed to represent.

So, the first one off is Italy (France is going to take a while to conceive of how to do).

Italy, in the colors of Italian pinot grigio.

Sly interpretation:

Pinot Grigio is mostly from Northern Italy, particularly the Lombardy and Friuli-Venezia regions (Pinot grigio being the Italian counterpart to the French Pinot Gris, so hey, look at Big Brother France giving Little Italy one of his varietals. Not to mention that the best of the best of Pinot Grigios comes from border region with Austria, formerly of the HRE, where German is still spoken. Hetalia is every where, baby).

Now, pinot grigio does not have the best reputation among wine snobs around the world. It tends to get passed over as an uncomplicated, not terribly interesting white wine that requires little thought. And its true, there are a lot of really lame ass pinot grigios out there--watery, weak, bland and forgettable. Its also one of the most mass produced and imported wines on the market.

BUT!! Its foolish to overlook or write off this potentially lovely and deceptively great wine. Pinot grigios are pleasant, they are refreshing and light and ideal for summers and good company---more than this, though, when one stumbles upon a truly well made Pinot Grigio, with the sudden bite of acidic fruit and a hint of grass..you feel foolish for having assumed the pinot wouldn't have much to offer beyond ease and accessibility.

So, Feliciano...underestimated, generally viewed as pleasant and charming at best, but rarely looked to for hidden, surprising depths and characteristics that catch unsuspecting people who think they know better off-guard. Approachable, beloved, even if maligned, and most reminiscent of the the light and air of summer.
