Out of curiosity, because I'm new to this sort of thing, do many people actually get told that they're like an evil character? Also, is justification for a weird choice necessary, or does one just leave 'em wondering?

Usually people like it if you justify, so if you can, you should. However, those lazy folks among us (like me) usually prefer to just give the short answer.

And it really depends on the community. Generally people aren't offended.
