We are getting our ducts cleaned Thursday. They are 95 years old and we can safely assume its never been done and my sinuses are killing me. It can't hurt and its cheaper than doctors if you get them on a discount. Also, they will run a camera down there and let us know about leaks, etc, a thing I would like to know.
I am also wondering about a gas heater that can be used while the electric is out. It seems the electric goes out in my area pretty often and here we sit with a lovely gas furnace we can't use when the electric is out.
I called one place and explained the situation to their clerk, who said they didn't install gas heaters of that style, but did electric ones.
"What will that do when the electric goes out?"
It actually took her several seconds to figure that one out. I was working up a good head of frustration, so I just hung up.
I may regret this, but I submitted my thoughts and requirements to a webpage called FIXR, because I didn't want to spend the entire day telling clerks of heat & air techs that I am not interested in wall mounted electric heaters.
We have a fabulous gas furnace. We also have a metric ton of trees overhanging all the power lines in the greater metro area, which cause us to lose power every time the wind blows.
What I want is a wall mounted gas heater or 2(depending on cost) that I can turn on and sleep in front of for the week it takes them to clear the ice, put out the fire and re-string the lines next winter and all the years after that. The tree situation seems to be bad, also they've had fires, and other random "so much ice it doesn't work anymore" things. I suspect the infrastructure is in need of a good overhaul and there's no money for it.
I sat here last winter and stared into a gas furnace that is so complex that it can't be lit by hand and turned off like in the old days and froze trying to use a Coleman campstove for heat because there were no kerosene stoves in the stores. Day 2 somebody produced a broken one I could use if I fixed it, which I did.
I do not want to go to a shelter, I'd rather stay home where its peaceful. Also, we have a 12 year old cat with asthma. What do we do with her if we go to a shelter? Leave her to freeze?
