CUSTOM: Hand-Painted Evangelion Fan

I'm back after an annoying bit of business with my computer's motherboard. Thankfully, it was ONLY the motherboard so no data was lost. At any rate I'm really sorry for how spotty I've been with being...well, AROUND recently. Getting close to graduating from university means my classes are pretty demanding and I've been kind of stressed recently so needless to say it's interfered with updating.

Today I'm going to showcase a small project I recently completed. I'd had an ordinary folding paper fan lying about for ages and since it was just plain black I knew I wanted to do something with it. (I suppose properly speaking it's not a custom, just an original fanwork.) I puzzled over what I was going to paint on it for ages before settling on a design.

Painting on a folding fan is more difficult than it sounds, by the way. There was a fair bit of trial and error involved in getting the design to my satisfaction.

No one who has spent much time reading my blog should be surprised that I made an Evangelion fan, of course. I love Eva way too much.

I kept the design fairly simple. Earlier experiments with a more complicated design didn't work too well; 2D painting is not one of my strong skills.

Simple motifs that will be familiar to any fan (badum-tsh) of the series.

The fan actually "worked with me" on the crosses as the vertical part follows the spines.
The scattered Angel faces were an attempt to mimic a common pattern on traditional fans of scattered cherry blossoms.
(This is a shot of it hanging on the wall rather than spread on a table.)

The motifs on much of the new merch for Evangelion 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo are fairly similar to how I painted this so I think it would fit in decently with some of the official merchandise.

I hope you enjoy it!
