The New Year's Issue

Long time no see.

I would like to wish everyone out there a happy New Year, and hope 2013 brings good things to all.

As the Mayan Calendar ran out of room and we had no moon/asteroid/Lavos hit our planet to bring all existence to an end, I decided to take some time to write in the seemingly-abandoned journal.

I have my own hypotheses on how the game works. The one that seems most likely is that...erm...let's go over the engine first.

At the end of every week, Bell will arrive and perform a ritual to upgrade the doll. As Johaan agreed to give up his "bond" with the other characters to remake Julietta, the fuel used for the ritual is represented by playing cards that stand for his bond with certain characters (there's a stack for Roze, a stack for Rio and so on).

The stacks build up as Johaan spends time around these characters during the week. If Johaan spends time with Roze and says the right things, his stack of cards for Roze will grow. Likewise, ignoring someone will cause their stack of cards to get smaller.

My thought is that the more cards related to one character you sacrifice to upgrade the doll, the more the chance of that character dying. An alternate look at this is that progressing a character's story far enough will take a turn into that character dying (seeing how Rio's story ends).

There's plenty I haven't uncovered. I still can't figure out how to get the ending for Accelle (I know that due to her ressemblence to Julietta, she dies the same way Etta did), how to trigger Terrale and Ruppi's routes (did it once by accident by making Johaan's benefactor go bankrupt), and what are the requirements to keep the doll from killing Johaan in the event he decides to break the pact with Bell.

That sounds like a perfectly reasonable way for the game to do things, and a very smart one if done correctly...which doesn't seem to be quite the case, if your forward progress is halted by things being so obtuse. Dang! This game just interests me so much. It's disappointing to not be able to learn more about it due to it being so convoluted.
