Okay, so I've been here a whole week now and the jet lag has finally worn off. Thank God! Right now I'm still going through in-processing and today I passed the test to get my UK drivers license. Mostly I've been getting alot of briefings on what Lakenheath has to offer and various nuances of British culture. I've learned that in the winter the sun rises at about 8 and sets around 3:30. Combine that with the frequent rainstorms and it really isn't hard to see why their sense of humor is so dry. Not enough sun to make them very cheery people. One cool thing about this place though is that you can really sense the history here. At night, when the wind is blowing through the moss covered trees and the ravens are cawing at each other as they settle in, it's easy to see why people were scared of the dark and believed in magic. This place feels just as steeped in it now as it did then. The other evening, when a few of us were out playing football while it rained, there was a sudden brake in the clouds and golden sunlight shot through and bathed the field and trees in color, I thought to myself, "Man, this is what ancient kings must have seen and believed that God was showing them he was on their side." It really is easy to imagine the battles that must have been fought here long ago or realize what a lord might have felt as he surveyed his land. This is definitely the home of fantasy and where every story is set.
Well, the library is closing soon, so I'll tell you about the converted manor I got to house sit next time. Talk to you later!
