The End of Chapter 1
I was keeping the fact that I was shivering well hidden, until my teeth started chattering.
"You must be freezing. Do you want to go inside?" he asked. His eyes were concerned again.
"Um, no. Not really. We can though, if you want to." I answered.
"I don't either."
"At that moment, Nikki came running outside. "There you two are! Have you been out here all this time?! You're missing out on all the fun!" I was willing to miss all the fun if Cooper was willing to miss it with me. I had to tell myself to knock it off. He wasn't interested in me. I figured it was best to leave as soon as possible so that I didn't crush on Cooper any more than I was already.
"I'm actually really tierd. Could you take me home?" I asked Nikki.
"Oh, um sure." She said. "I'll go grab our purses."
"It was really nice to meet you." I said to Cooper. I couldn't help but smile at hime.
"You too." He said smiling back. I went inside the house to look for Nikki. I was ambushed by Taylor, Rob, Kyle and Elijah. "You can't leave!" Rob and Elijah exclaimed simultaneously. "Get out of my head!" They yelled at each other at the same time again.
"I have to. I'm sorry guys." I said giggling a little bit. Cooper made me giddy.
"You have to come out with us more from now on." Taylor ordered. "We're not afraid to kidnap you."
"I'll come over more. I promise." It wouldn't be a difficult promise to keep if Cooper was going to be around.
I looked behind the guys to where Sami was talking to Bailey. "It was really nice to meet you, Bailey." I said once more, hugged Sami and went outside with Nikki. I got to her car when Cooper called to me.
"Hey Amelia!"
"Yeah?" I replied.
"Um," he hesitated and stood up. He seemed to be having trouble deciding what he wanted to say. "Have a good night." he finished, half smiling at me.
"You too." I returned the smile
On the drive home, I was quiet. I was too busy thinking about Cooper's hesitation. I had an irking feeling that "Have a good night." was not what he wanted to say. What was he going to say?
"You were outside for a logn time." Nikki said interrupting my thoughts.
"Yeah. I needed some fresh air." I told her the same lie I told Cooper.
"Oh. Did you have fun?" she asked.
"Yep." I don't think she realized that I spent the majority of my time there outside.
"Taylor and Bailey make a really cute couple don't they?"
"They're a couple? I thought they had one date planned." I was surprised. One date that hadn't even happened yet hardly made them a couple. Not that I would know. I never had a boyfriend.
"Same difference. They're going to end up together. I have an eye for these things. It's like my sixth sense."
"Right."
"MEL!" she gasped suddenly. This startled me.
"What?!"
"I just had an amazing idea! I should set you up with Cooper! You guys looked so cute when I found you! What do you think?"
"No! No, no, absolutely not!" Why was I saying no? "He's out of my league." I reasoned.
"Oh shut up! He is so not. You guys were so adorable!"
"Please don't." I pleaded. It would be beyond mortifying if he knew I had a crush on him and he didn't feel the same way.
"Fine. Be alone! See if I care!" She said dropping the subject. She did care. She was always trying to set me up with someone. It never worked out.
When I got home, I found my mom sleeping on the couch in the same outfit she had been wearing all day. She had some infomercial playing on the TV. I went upstairs to her room and grabbed the comforter from her unmade bed. Once I reached the living room again, I covered her with the blanket, kissed her on the forehead and turned the TV off.
When I got to my room, I changed out of my green halter and jeans and put on purple sweatpants and a white tank top. I was too tired to shower. I got into bed and stared at the ceiling once more. Nikki thought Cooper and I were adorable together. How amazing would it be if he were attracted to me? I rolled over on my side and closed my eyes. For the first time in months, I fell asleep with a smile on my face.
