Pink and Gray
OK milk cream rose 4/6Y<62> 128×180∞ almost 264p, 24 east asian width.

On the bookshelf on my back, as I work in my study, there is a book with this on the spine. Nothing is written inside. The whole page is a pure white book.

This is called a tsukamihon, and it is a sample that reproduces the size, number of pages, materials, etc. of the book to be produced, and is used to accurately grasp the weight and dimensions of the book. When publishing a book, authors often produce a sample of a book and make all kinds of adjustments to the thickness, texture, color, cover, and appearance of the cover from the reader's point of view. However, the authors themselves rarely receive their tsukamihon.

Shortly after receiving the Eiji Yoshikawa Newcomer Award,I received this tsukamihon from Kumi Suzuki, who designed the binding of my debut novel, "Pink and Gray." I was strangely moved when I received it with a letter from her saying that she had kept it until then and that she wanted to present it to me as a gift to congratulate me on winning the award.

This is a sample of my debut work before it was published. It is said that a writer creates something from nothing, and if so, this sample is about 0.8. However, nothing has been written on it yet. It is an empty "Pink and Gray."

Ten years have passed since then. We have made many samples, filled the white pages with text, and published many books. It is thanks to the readers and people involved that I am somehow able to face the white screen like this without breaking off my writing.

This book, "1 and 0 and Kato Shigeaki," is not just an anthology, nor an autobiography, nor an author's commentary. It is a book for me to look back at the past, look at the present, and step forward into the future. You can call it a milestone or a progress report, but whatever the case, I can only say that it is a book filled with what I need to be doing now and what I want to do.

Ten years is a short time to look back. Still, I would like to express my gratitude to the readers and everyone involved. For my own sake, I would like to take this opportunity to look back and see how far I have come in ten years. I am willing to accept the fact that I came forward as the editor responsible for this project as a test of my preparedness to be seen as a touchstone.

One and zero. Yes and no. Straight lines and curves. Black and white. I expose what is in me at the moment and write it here.
