I discovered
this some time ago and YouTube, and really dug it. It's annoyingly catchy and addictive, and come on - hobbits. So I know it's kind of old news now, but for awhile it was totally a meme, wasn't it? Sometimes I still get it stuck in my head, and I never before knew why. . . UNTIL NOW.
Here is a spiffy
article about the prosody in this video. It is a beautifully written linguistic article, clearly after my own heart. Be sure to read the comments, too! For those who might be confused,
prosody, according to Wikipedia, "may reflect the emotional state of a speaker; whether an utterance is a statement, a question, or a command; whether the speaker is being ironic or sarcastic; emphasis, contrast and focus; and other elements of language which may not be encoded by grammar."
This is very cool. I knew this existed (one of the reasons I use emoticons too much, prosody is often difficult to convey on the internet), but never knew it was called prosody, nor realized the implications upon musicality.
I am highly interested! These kinds of linguistics totally turn me on. <3
