Alan Moore! I am so in awe of his awesomeness!
Usually I just cringe in horror when they turn his stories into movies, but V for Vendetta was fantastic! The lines (however flowery and Moore-ish they were) were delivered expertly, so the taste of his writing wasn't lost. The core symbolism was preserved and the mystery unfolded with good timing. I was quite impressed and I hope, despite his recent refusal to endorse movies based on his work, that Mr. Moore is at very least relieved if not thrilled by the fleshing-out of one of his earlier pieces.
Although I felt a little bludgeoned over the head by the message to the United States (one Moore originally constructed for the increasingly Conservative UK in the early 1980s), I was also struck by an other, more quietly delivered message. When they mentioned Oppenheimer I felt guilty. When that misguided geneticist pleaded for death, having realised she'd become a monster..... Well, I guess it's good that someone is reminding us to behave now and again! I've always kind of thought that scientists should be subjected to the same training in morality that engineers are given. I also believe that certification should be withheld pending tests on moral judgment similar to those engineers are given. I wonder why they don't do that with scientists? Should society really trust science to be benevolent? I certainly don't think so.
