Do people respond to you differently now that you have purple hair than before you did? If so how?
A timely question, since as of yesterday morning, I no longer have the purple hair. Bye-bye punky purple, hello hire-me brown. I've had purple hair for something like 8 years, and it was first dyed during a very formative stage of my life, so the difference between then and now has a lot more to do with my self than my hair. That said, I did go brown for an internship a couple of summers ago, so I can tell you the difference between the ways in which I was used to being treated and the response to the brown. Honestly, there seems to be little difference that I can tell. Fewer strangers talked to me out of the blue, which tends to happen fairly frequently when my hair is fresh and bright. In general, people assumed that I was older, and the staring stopped almost entirely (there were still a few children who asked their parents loudly about my gender, but I've always taken that as a sort of compliment). Other than that, not much. I'll keep you posted on whether I see any significant changes this time around (other than the general wailing that has gone up amongst my peers who are dismayed at such a blatant display of pragmatism).
