Beauty and I Love You
It was an interesting mix of flowers; there was no doubt about it. The (very large) bouquet consisted entirely of two kinds of flowers: calla lilies and red roses. But… why such a mismatched pair of flowers, Haruhi wondered as she pressed her nose to the bouquet again. However strange the combination, they looked good together. Most people put white and red roses together, but it was interesting to see the dashes of yellow that appeared in a sea of innocent looking lilies and all-knowing, all-romantic roses.
Suddenly something flashed quickly and disappeared as she admired the bouquet. A quizzical expression washed the awe and admiration off her face as she looked up at Mori for answers. His reaction was a little disappointing; he said nothing (as usual) and continued slightly smiling at her until she couldn’t hold in her curiosity anymore.
“Takashi…do you know something that I don’t?”
“…” He nodded.
“Are you going to tell me?” she pressed further.
“…” He shook his head, no. He simply jerked his head in the direction of the bouquet that she was still clasping with both hands and holding near her heart.
She sighed, resigned after such a small challenge to her beloved Mori-sempai.
She looked at her bouquet again and held it up towards the sunlight that cast a bright square of light on the floor of Mori’s spacious bedroom from the skylight. Once again, she caught a flash out of the corner of her eye. She turned the bouquet slightly, and there it was again. She examined the section that kept nearly blinding her more closely and saw that hooked on the yellow seed stalk in a lily was the source of blinding light.
Haruhi nearly dropped the bouquet in shock. Her heart was beating so hard and so fast that she worried the world would hear how nervous she was as she asked: “Taka…what is this?”
The unthinkable happened. Making sure not to hit the recently re-outfitted bed, Mori bent down on one knee.
“Haruhi…” he smiled as he saw the tiniest tear of joy teasing the corner of her right eye, threatening to roll down her cheek any second. “…Haruhi…be my bride?”
“Only if it’s a small wedding…” She tugged at his hand for him to stand up; he obliged.
He raised an eyebrow…as if there were any question of having a small, intimate wedding. Pft.
Haruhi noticed his teasing and said in a soft voice, “Of course I’ll marry you…”
Mori beamed.
“But just one question: why calla lilies and roses?”
“Calla lilies mean beauty, which describes you perfectly…and roses mean ‘I love you.’”
She nodded and held out the bouquet to him. If she was going to get proposed to, she was damn sure it was going to be traditional…despite the fact that she was fairly untraditional.
He smiled and pulled the ring off of the flower, took her hand, slipped the ring onto her finger, and pulled her into his arms.
“I love you, Beautiful…”
There was no need to say it anymore…the flowers could do all of the talking.
