Ink or metal: The choices of today’s youth

A question I have been looking at recently is the concept of tattoos and piercing. The two body modifications that are seen so widely today with the counterculture. The question is, are tattoos to permanent for many of today’s young people. I personally always loved the concept of ink under the skin, a peace of art on my body for all to see. I when I was younger went as soon as I was able to over to the local tattoo shop to get something done. It felt exhilarating and knowing that I was doing something that would last the rest of my life made it seem a bit more interesting. Today I look back about 4 years later and I still love the thing I got done way back when, it still looks as good as the day I got it done, there is no chance of it healing over, it is there for life. But this seems to be the problem I have found with many of the young people I run into, getting something done for life is something they can not life with. They instead choose the route of piercing, something I have always found very attractive on many people, yet something I never thought worked on me. I have tried the classic earring way back when I was 16, putting it in my ear during a health class. Yes my first piercing was done when I was in class. Although I really do not wear it much, it is really not my style. But yet people today I have found steering clear of the ink, preferring the metal.

Now I can only judge on the city I live in, since I have not done a global survey, but are tattoos just too permanent for people now days, is the concept of something that you can never change your mind on turning people off this great art form. I certainly hope not, it is something that is not for everyone though this I will be the first to admit. piercing are something that in 10 years you can decide to just discard, leave as a fragment of your youth no longer a part of who you are, tattoos do not have this option, once done there will always be some scar left, even if it is removed nothing is that easy, it does not come off cleanly. Well it all comes down to what are you sure you want on your body, if your sure on who you are as a person and know what you can deal with, then yes a tattoo may be for you, if your unsure and want to explore the person you want to be, a piercing may be the way to go. Ether way you go, make sure it is an expression of yourself and not just a way to fit the group, it is your body do what you want, not what others want for you! Both of them are an expression of the person you are be it Ink or Metal, do it for yourself.
