I started my first IV ! WOOT!
All last week I was stressing out, dreading having to poke and be poked during IV check-offs. I don't remember ever having an IV because the only time I've had one, I was 18 months old. Needless to say I was a little nervous. My lab partner (my friend Michelle) had never actually stuck a vein before and never had an IV EITHER, so we both were a big wad of nerves.
I practiced and practiced on the mannequin in our school lab - getting the technique, motor skills, and positioning down. When it came time to stick each other, I went first. I wanted it over with! I was so freaking nervous - but my hands were steady because I KNEW what I was doing. I got the needle in with minimal ouching from Michelle and I got a flashback of blood - HOORAY! However, once I got the IV hooked up, it didn't infuse. Boo! The instructor said I did perfect, though - technique and everything was "text book" so I passed. I am now approved to start IVs on patients!
Then it was Michelle's turn to stick me. I'm not gonna lie. IVs freaking hurt when they're starting them. Once the catheter is in and the needle is out, it's not SO bad. It's just kinda uncomfortable.
We'll be starting heaps of IVs in the hospital over the next 5 weeks. I can't wait. ;D
My goal is to get so good at starting IVs that they call me "The Vampire"... >:)
On another note: my hair is black black black again, but I think I'm going to work towards going go Kate Walsh red. Her hair is frickin' gorgeous!
