The Facebook ToS debacle

Feb 18, 2009 09:48

I have an account at Facebook.  I have friended a few of you there.  I keep a VERY low profile on Facebook and have had decidedly mixed feelings about the site overall for quite some time.  Why am I there?  Some friends were VERY adamant about how much "better" Facebook was than LJ or other sites and twisted my virtual arm to at least "give it a try".

Well, I have.  Despite the fact that they've now "temporarily reverted" to their original ToS is no comfort to me.  I remain very leery of putting many things online ANYWHERE (despite the fact that I am an avowed "early adopter" and enthusiastic promoter of the promise of internet connectivity).  There's just too much potential for either abuse or misuse.  (And I have GOT to wonder about the thought processes of people--any age, really--who post photos of drunken parties, illegal or at least stupid behavior and boasting about doing things that are clearly "over the line" and then are SURPRISED to find out that employers, potential creditors and the like are searching and finding this--WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?????)

So for now, the Facebook account (such as it is) remains.  And remains with very little activity until I see where it is heading.

I love being able to communicate with people who are in various places and timezones....  I don't love the heavy handed siezure of "rights" by entities like Facebook.

As was said early on (and is stil valid to this day):  Don't post/publish anything that you aren't comfortable seeing on the front page of a newspaper (or USA Today's website).  Because there really IS no such thing as "anonymity" on dar Interwebs.......
