love in the time of science - chapter eight (part 2)

Here's part two of chapter eight. Make sure you read part one first.

Also, like I said, eljay is mean to me, so this picks up oddly after the flashback, and hopefully you are not too confused.  Because I know I am after posting all of this.  Seriously, eljay?  Why such a bitch?  *headdesk*

Ok, I lied I'm too addicted I came back and read now I'm going to get the kids stuff ready for tomorrow..

I love how Derek turned to Bailey. I love the advice she gave him. Derek needs to get Meredith to see he's there for her, even though she's always had no one to turn to. She needs to be reassured that Derek is there for her, even if she doesn't realize she needs him, she does... Another amazing chapter!!

I'm glad you enjoyed Derek's conversation with Bailey! I really enjoy the glimpses of their friendship we get to see on the show. I think Derek really respects and trusts her opinion, and that, even though she can be a bit snarky about it, Bailey really does care about Derek and Meredith. Hee. They've come so far from the night she caught them in the car! And yeah, this chapter Derek just desperately needed someone to talk to about what's going on with Mer. He feels like what's bothering him is less serious than what's bothering Mer, so he's just been keeping it all inside, and that hasn't been doing him any good.

Anyway, thank you so much for reading! I'm glad you're still enjoying the story. :)

So well done!! I absolutely loved everything about this. Your flashback explained a lot and was so wonderfully textured and in character. But my favorite part was Derek's conversation with Bailey. After Meredith's drowning, Derek definitely had some major PTSD going on, a story that they kind of dropped in favor of a different story featuring him as a douchebag. Realistically, I think he'd still be entirely freaked out whenever Meredith showed any sign of instability, and he'd want to handle it in some way. I love that he told Bailey, because when Derek tries to know what's best for Meredith, it sometimes backfires. In big ways. And Bailey is, well, Bailey, the voice of reason who often points him to the better and more simplified solution to the problem than the one he has thought of. So yeah, basically what I'm trying to say is that I loved his conversation with Bailey, and I can't wait to see if he acts on it! I understand his concern here, but I think Bailey is right. Great job! I can't wait for more!

a story that they kind of dropped in favor of a different story featuring him as a douchebagHee. So true. That's pretty much the best description of the end of season three. I hated that they dropped Derek's PTSD in the blink of an eye because, for a few episodes there, the poor guy was majorly messed up. I mean, not going to sleep just so he could be up in order to make sure she was still breathing?? Derek was not okay. And he really shouldn't have to be. He had to drag Mer's (essentially) dead body out of the water. I think that had to have changed him quite a bit ( ... )

Morgen, I love this story so much. Between your story and the amazingness of TV Grey's these days, I'm definitely in Mer/Der heaven ( ... )

Thank you so much! Derek really does have this driving need to be strong and together all the time. He so rarely opens up about what makes him vulnerable to Mer, and yeah, we definitely are in agreement that it would be a good! thing for him to share more about that stuff. And yeah, Mer is not heartless. I don't think she avoids her problems to hurt/frighten Derek, it's just the way she copes with things. If he would let her see how much his actions come from being afraid and not from some desire to be overprotective and controlling, well...I think it'd be good for them ( ... )

Yeah, I try to avoid thinking about the "That's all you've earned for now" line because it makes me hate Derek with a fiery passion. He really does have his assy moments. But what is interesting to me is that Meredith knew. She seems to have known almost right away that he was the one. She says as much to him in the "whore" speech (another one of Derek's incredibly assy moments). I think she fell hard and fast for him, which is another reason why what happened afterward was so traumatic for her. Derek, on the other hand, seems to have been so wrapped up in his own pain that it took him awhile to realize that he had fallen in love with Meredith. Anyway, I don't think he realizes how much he hurt her when he chose Addison. And yeah, I know what you mean about the way she looked at him before Addison. Although I must say I was pretty blown away by the way she looked at him the other night when they were dancing it out. It was like she sees him for what he is - somebody who is just as dark and twisty as she is - and she loves ( ... )

Yeah, it is interesting how Meredith was so incredibly into the relationship and saw him as the person she was going to spend the rest of her life with before his wife showed up. She really did fall hard and fast for him, I think in part because she's never done anything like this before. She has no experience with anything similar to her relationship with Derek, and I think it was probably all so new and incredible for her. It makes me want to hug poor, blissfully happy season one Mer because that girl has NO CLUE what's about to come crashing down on her happiness.

But yeah, at the same time...while I miss that adoring, head over heels look of season one (and yeah, EP is amazing at putting so much into a single look), I think that it's for the best that her initial way of looking at Derek fell apart. In season one, he was very much McDreamy to her, this perfect guy who was pretty much sweeping her off her feet. Now, she has a much better understanding of him as a decidedly flawed, but still very good sort of man, and I think ( ... )

uh oh. while I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Derek confiding in Bailey, am I right to think that Mer won't be too pleased if she finds out? It's making me nervous ( ... )

You deserve a looong comment and much praise, but I'm short of time, so let me just say, I agree to everything in the comments above :)
This was soooo wonderful. I love that Derek turned to Bailey, because I always like their scenes together. On screen and in fics. And I hope that he might have a chance to talk to Meredith before she finds out that he keeps her off the case, which will rightfully piss her off.
I can't wait to see him confront her about the drowning and what that did to him.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. :D Derek and Bailey are two of my favorites to put together because she does such a good job of talking sense into him. He doesn't have a lot of friends to turn to in Seattle when he can't talk to Mer, and while Mark is great and all, I think he trusts Bailey more than him. He seems to have kept things with Mark fairly lighthearted and jokey these days. Anyway, thanks for reading! :)
