It's a sad day. One of the people I wait on, a lively, spry, 86 year old lady, is not going to make it. She's one of my favorite people to wait on, she's super nice, she always gets the same thing, always has a smile for everyone, and now no more. Her son, who comes in with her everyday, came in alone on Saturday (I don't normally work Saturdays, I picked up a hostess shift) anyway, the son, when paying said something about back to the hospital. Of course I responded with "oh no, is everything okay" and he told me his mom had a urinary infection. Usually no big deal, except she's got congestive heart failure. When he came in on Sunday I asked him how she was, and he said she was in x-ray to see if she'd had a stroke. When I saw him today and asked him about her he said, very matter-of-factly, "She's dying". After a heartfelt appology from me, I teared up, I'll admit it. I had to go in the back and compose myself. I told the other girls I was working with, and they teared up as well. She's a cool lady and we're going to miss her.
Personally I'm hoping aginst hope a miracle will happen and she'll be okay. Ugh, I'm not used to seeing someone I kind of know, someone I see all the time, someone who was fine last week, just go so far downhill so quickly.
