Bau_fic “Look at what we made.” Penelope Garcia sleepily points to the bassinet next to her bed. “A big stubborn girl. Our daughter would come into the world, butt first, just to complicate things.”
“Now, Baby Girl, you can't tell me that Maddie was stubborn. If anything, she's spoiled us.” Derek Morgan peeks into the little bed, taking in the sight of the new baby. The way she snuffles in her sleep. The way she curls her left hand into a fist. There's something very familiar about her mannerisms. “She's just like her big sister. Also, she needs a name.”
“Your job. I had her. You name her. We had a deal.”
With that, Garcia drifts to sleep.
Quietly, Morgan wheels the bassinet over to a mahogany rocking chair. As he watches the baby sleep, he remembers that his husband has probably been glued to the phone, waiting for any kind of news.
“Hello?”
“Reid, it's me. You can breathe now.”
“Is she here?”
“Eight pounds, eight ounces of healthy, stubborn girl. She was breech so Garcia had to have a c-section. She's sleeping now.”
“Garcia or the baby?”
“Both. Oh and our daughter needs a name.”
“Well, what does she look like?”
“I don't know. I haven't had that much time to investigate her. I haven't even held her yet.”
“What's stopping you? Hold her. If we're lucky, she'll name herself. Although, I still really like Coco and Whitley.”
Jamming the phone between his ear and his shoulder, Morgan carefully scoops the baby up. As he settles the bundle of soft pink blankets in his arms, he takes her in.
“She's got Garcia's eyes. And our girl is definitely not a Whitley or a Coco. We liked Benjamin for a boy, didn't we?”
“Technically, yes but no daughter of mine will be called Benjamin for a girl. Not that I believe in gender stereotypes but...Anyhow.”
“Benji Grace Morgan.”
“I like the Grace but I'm not completely sold on the Benji. Delia?”
“No. Just no. Come on, Reid. Think about it.”
“I suppose I could live with Benji. Hold on. Benji, pick up your toys! Benji, do your homework. Hmm. You try.”
“Why do I have to try?”
“You're holding her,”
“Touche.” Morgan bites down on his lip. “Hello, Benji Grace. We're not quite sure that's your name but your Daddy Spencer is insisting I try it out. So, Baby Girl, if you like your name, give me some kind of sign.”
Much to Morgan's surprise, the baby girl in his arms opens her eyes and stares right back at him.
“Well?”
“She opened her eyes. I think we have our name. Benji Grace.”
“Maddie and Benji, our beautiful girls.”
“When you say it like that, it's her name. Oh and it's weird to think that we now have two. Both girls. Think God's punishing me for all the trouble I caused before I met you?”
“Um...”
“Never mind. Get some sleep. You know Maddie will be up soon. And then you're going to have to come see her. You don't want pictures, right?”
“As odd as it sounds, I'd rather meet her face to face. Good night. I love you.”
“Love you too, Reid. Hug our girl for me.”
Reid hangs up with an audible click.
Morgan holds her close as he begins to rock.
“Welcome to the world, Baby Girl. We're so happy that you're here. We're going to make mistakes. Lord knows that we've done that with your big sister. However, generally, we're cool dads.”
She yawns.
Shifting her weight, he gently places her back in the bassinet.
“Sleep tight, Benji Girl. I'll be here as you sleep.”
