I don't think I will see this again

Dan and I were heading down to the River on Sunday as there is someone who is interested in renting the trailer down there. Now, this is really the first nibble we've had on it in the 18 months we have had it up for sale. The couple is interested in a "rent to own" and that is better yet if the deal goes through.

However, this is not what this particular post is about, this is about what we saw on the way down. We were coming through the Maccan Woods when I saw something on the road ahead: large, a tawny coat and it sauntered from the woods, across the road and into the woods on the other side. It was not a dog, and certainly not a deer, too big for a lynx and without the lynx's distinctive markings. The way it moved as it crossed the road, however, was definitely feline. I am about 99% sure that this is what I saw:

The Eastern Cougar.

This species of cat is very rare, and it's status in Nova Scotia/New Brunswick is officially "unknown" at this point in time. That said, there have been an increasing number of sightings of the cat in the last twenty years. This does mean that there may be a population, however small, out there. As of Sunday I, for one, am convinced that the cats are there.

I know, though, that I likely shall not be so blessed as to see one again.

animal planet, c'est ma vie, uh oh canada!
