Life feels very busy at the moment and I think actually talking to people has slightly dropped out of my abilities- thank goodness for DW/LJ, twitter & whatsapp or I'd probably vanish altogether :-P
(but seriously, last minute trip to Antwerp at the end of next week couldn't come at a better time because I just need to be AWAY for a bit where I can actually take a break and not have to answer three phone calls before 10 on a Saturday trying to explain Girlguiding's database not that that happened)
On the otherhand I DID finally get to some more theatre this week which was very nice. Well. Horrible because Webster is not messing around in The White Devil but I have not seen enough plays this year.
The White Devil @ Sam Wanamaker Playhouse
Death and misogyny and general awfulness abound in this play of course because it's Jacobean and its Webster and that's how these things word.
It was interesting that Vittoria did at least seem to be actively enjoying the affair that destroyed everyone's lives I guess? I mean she had clearly been married off for money and was now finding a way to happiness but she still ended up mostly being bounced around between various men's desires and needs.
I very much enjoyed seeing Joseph Timms again, he played Vittoria's brother Flamineo and was properly amoral and out to win a better life for himself (spoiler alert, it doesn't end well!) I think my favourite scene was him and Lodovico (played by the fantastic Fergal McElherron) literally circling each other like prowling cats as they sounded each others' position out.
I also really enjoyed what they were doing with the light, it was mostly very dark and they'd changed the usual chandeliers for ones that were entirely un-ornamented to really make it feel bleaker.
It really was a vicious play, though not as gory as some I suppose? And the cast seemed to really enjoy getting their teeth into it. It was a nice re-introduction to the SWP for me as I haven't been this winter season yet.
