Apparently it's February already? I read 8 books in January so off to a good start! The Art of Being Normal was definitely the best though I loved Redshirts (finally) and it was good to finally finish the Chaos Walking books. Also the Bettanys book was lovely. I read 7 books a month on average last year, maybe I'll try and go one better this year ( Read more... )

I have still only read The Knife of Never Letting Go, and it's ridiculous of me, because I own the other two, and I buy and read everything new he publishes (because Patrick Ness is AMAZING), but they just somehow end up being forgotten about. :(

I didn't realise Helen Barber had a new book out. I must remember to look out for it at Foyles (at least, I'm assuming Foyles still sells the GGBP. I'm kind of out of the loop on GO at the moment, which makes me sad in itself.).

Also, let me squee at you some more about TAOBN. I read it in a few hours the day it arrived because I couldn't put it down, and I remember surprising myself by spontaneously bursting into tears at the prom scene. I just loved it utterly and completely. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. I have the poster on my bedroom door! (Yes, I am 36 years old. *g*) Also, it took me *ages* to get what was going on with Leo. AGES. Also also, Lisa is just lovely (and has great taste in musicals, as she recommended In the Heights to me when I asked about it on twitter. Which made me realise she was following me, which was slightly worrying given the crap I spend most of my time tweeting. :D). Anyway, in short, I want EVERYONE to read this book and I don't understand why it hasn't been up for ALL the awards. :D

Never ever look down on YA lit.

YESSSSSS. I saw a quote in Waterstones today which said something along the lines of 'YA is like the Garden of Eden at the moment' (I am paraphrasing wildly, as I can't remember the exact quote) and I think it's true that some of the best writing is coming from the YA field right now. Which is why Frances Hardinge won the Costa. (I highly recommend her books too btw.) Also, I am currently reading Asking For It, which may be one of the hardest books I've ever read, YA or not. It is so well written, but the subject matter is gut wrenching. Everyone needs to read that too, YA label or not.
